Continuing from Part 1 of our blog series entitled “Research Shows Chiropractic Care Effective“, perhaps the best evidence of care from a chiropractor being effective came from the Quebec Automobile Insurance Society. They insure all care in Quebec and pay so many whiplash claims that they commissioned a task force to study all scientific information on the care of whiplash.
After 3 years reviewing 10,382 articles on neck injuries, they recommended spinal manipulation (which chiropractic doctors call adjustments). The majority of remedies commonly used were rejected as having not even been studied scientifically, including: Continue reading Research Shows Chiropractic Care Effective (Part 2)
There is a substantial body of evidence that chiropractic care is effective for whiplash injuries. Researchers at the University of Calgary in Canada studied patients with sub-acute whiplash disorders. They assessed the effects of chiropractic adjustments to the neck on muscle function, range of motion, and pressure sensitivity. They found that the patients enjoyed significant improvements in all measured outcomes. Continue reading Research Shows Chiropractic Care Effective (Part 1)
If you, or someone you know has recently been involved in an automobile accident please call our office for a thorough chiropractic examination and consultation. The repercussions of whiplash and lower back injuries, if untreated, can be wide ranging.
Don’t ignore the signs of spinal injury. These include:
Following a car accident, or a slip or blow to the body, a person who has immediate symptoms is actually lucky because they seek treatment. Unfortunately, symptoms of whiplash injuries often do not appear for several days, weeks, or even month or years.
Common whiplash symptoms include:
- Neck pain or stiffness
- Shoulder pain or stiffness
- Pain between shoulder blades
- Anxiety or irritability
- Low back pain
- Sensitivity to noise
- Difficulty concentrating
- Blurred vision
- Difficulty swallowing
- Ringing in the ears
- Dizziness or vertigo
A study comparing gender in whiplash injuries concluded: “This population is more likely to be injured under whiplash loading”. Women are also more likely to suffer chronic (long lasting) symptoms from such accidents even with low-speed impacts. A study found that once injured, women are between 2 to 2.3 times more likely than men to have chronic symptoms.
It only takes a small force to cause injury to the lower neck, which is partly why even very low speed accidents cause injury. It seems counter-intuitive but before damage occurs in a car accident, the car getting hit remains relatively stiff and much of the energy from the collision goes into accelerating the car and the occupant(s) forward (causing the whiplash injury). Once the car getting hit starts to crumple much of the energy is spent bending or breaking parts on the car rather than Continue reading The Great Paradox: Car Accidents and Whiplash
